I’ve had the same ruddy backpack for the past 10 years and realized now is time to upgrade to a more sustainable backpack. While I was looking for sustainable backpack options, I thought putting all this together in a comprehensive list would be pretty beneficial. Here are the best sustainable backpacks you can get online:
Onyx and green really outdid themselves with this backpack. For only $19, it’s competitive enough to be a conventional backpack. Heck, most conventional backpacks go for at least $10 more than this one. Sustainable Rayon is presumably made from recycled materials, which is more expensive
I love the pockets on this cute sustainable hemp bag. Made from Pure Himalayan hemp, this is one of the most sustainable options on the list. It’s primarily a laptop bag, with so many pockets, I could cry for joy. The hemp has more of a tweed feel, so if you are into this kind of texture, it could be the bag for you.
Out of all the other styles on this list, the Mia bag is the one I’m probably going to end up getting. Yes, the price tag is a little bit higher than the others on this list, but it’s worth it. Made from recycled plastic bottles, like my shirts, it pulls the whole design together in the most minimal way possible.
If you’re more into the boho style, this might be the backpack for you. It’s made from Sustainable help, and one of the most sustainable options on this whole list (tied with the Mato canvas bag below.) Mato does their stuff really well: fair trade, ethically sourced, more environmentally friendly. The bags are made overseas, but at least they provide better working conditions for their workers than others.
Canvas is a good alternative to hemp if you’re like me and have trouble breathing in the smell of hemp. Mato does their stuff really well, ethics and environmentally wise, and this backpack is just really cute! It has a nice boho style, but it’s not overpowering because it is still sustainable black canvas. Plus, it’s the same price as a conventional backpack.
This is more of a purse backpack than something to carry your laptop. I just really loved how they used the cork to make a nice quilting pattern. Cork is a renewable resource, and while the bag is made overseas, the working conditions check out. Plus $38 isn’t that bad for a good quality backpack purse.
If you’re willing to shell out a little more than the others on a quirky backpack, this upcycled coffee backpack may be the thing for you. Made from fair trade coffee bags, this bag is sure to be a conversation starter.
Hope you enjoyed these sustainable fashion backpacks. Finding sustainable fashion is hard, which is why these brands, along with a whole bunch more are added to my list of sustainable clothing companies.
