There’s a new trend in the beauty industry to provide 5-free and 3-free nail polish. It’s about time. Though, I still get questions from my friends on what it means for their health. Is it worth spending a couple extra bucks on nail polish? The answer is a resounding YES if you care about your health. Here’s why
5-Free Means it’s free of 5 Carcinogens
Carcinogens seem like a big, fancy, and scary word. It simply means cancer-causing agent. These are chemicals that science has backed up time and time again, that use of these products is known to lead to cancer.
Yes, your chance of getting cancer is largely dependent on your genetics, environment, and a ton of other factors that are not yet entirely known. However, many of us still shrug off the threat; dismissing it as though we are all going to get cancer anyway.
Humans are notoriously BAD at determining risk. The risk of cancer is one of them. Yet, we would be better off not putting these toxic chemicals on our bodies, to begin with. Still, many of us do in spite of the warnings, and only slightly passively care about curing cancer once a month, every year.
Prevention can be just as good as finding a cure. Yet, it doesn’t get enough credit… because we SUCK at properly determining risk.
5-Free Means Free of Endocrine Disruptors
Oh, come on! More big words!
Endocrine simply means the hormone system and disruptors keep the hormones from working properly.
Our hormones are much more elusive in impacting our health than cancer, yet they are far more prevalent. Most of it has to do with the big severity that comes along with getting diagnosed with cancer. There is far more support. There are far many more resources. Much of our attention is focused on curing cancer because our hormonal system varies so much even on a time span of seconds.
It’s a lot harder to determine how these chemicals impact our daily moods, diabetes, hunger, menstrual cycles, puberty, and so many other things. We are all basically walking water-sacs of hormones. The slightest impact on our hormonal systems can lead to consequences that we can’t even fully understand yet.
We will get there, eventually. Though, in the meantime, it’s best to avoid them in our products, to begin with.
5-Free Nail Polish Brands to Look Out For
I personally adore Mineral Fusion. They’re convenient. You can find them at basically any whole foods, and their line is even getting expanded to CVS. Their remover, though makes my nails feel weird for a couple hours after removing the polish
The other brand you can almost always find at Whole Foods. Though, much of the time, their selection is pretty limited. Most likely just needed a reorder. Many more of the shimmer brands than any other types of nail polish in this category.
This brand started as a mail subscription service. I really like their range of colors, and it’s nice to have another widely used 5-free brand.
Have not tried this brand yet. You can find them at Target, which is super convenient.
I want to try this brand out so bad. Though I won’t even touch it until I know it’s 5 free. Essie, I’m looking at you.
